Wat Phra Singh, also known as Wat Phra Singh Woramahaviharn, is one of the most significant and revered temples in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Located within the ancient city walls, it stands as a prime example of classic Lanna architecture.

History:
The temple was founded in 1345 by King Phayu, the fifth king of the Mangrai Dynasty, to house the ashes of his father, King Kham Fu. Wat Phra Singh has undergone several restorations and expansions over the centuries, with significant work carried out during the reign of King Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII).

The temple’s most revered statue, Phra Buddha Sihing, arrived in Chiang Mai in the mid-14th century and is believed to have originated from Sri Lanka. This statue, also known as the Lion Buddha, attracts numerous devotees, especially during the Songkran Festival, when it is paraded through the streets of Chiang Mai for ceremonial bathing.

Present:
Today, Wat Phra Singh remains an active temple and a center for cultural and religious activities. The temple complex includes several structures of historical and architectural significance, such as the Wihan Lai Kham, known for its intricate murals depicting the Jataka tales, and the main chedi, which is a striking example of Lanna art.

Visitors to Wat Phra Singh can explore its beautifully adorned assembly halls, chedis, and the library, which showcases traditional Lanna wood carvings. The temple grounds are well-maintained, offering a serene environment for meditation and reflection.
